Voici quelques extraits d'un dictionnaire portugais-anglais écrit par un Portugais en 1883, English as she is spoke, qui dit dans sa préface :

“ A choice of familiar dialogues, clean of gallicisms, and despoiled phrases, it was missing yet to studious portuguese and brazilian Youth. We sought all we may do, to correct that want ... we did put, with a scrupulous exactness, a great variety own expressions to english and portuguese idioms, without to attach us selves (as make some others) almost at a literal translation ; translation what only will be for to accustom the portugese, or-foreign, to speak very bad any of the mentioned idioms.

Cet ouvrage fut réédité en 1969 avec une introduction de Mark Twain, expliquant ceci:

“ Nobody can add to the absurdity of this book ... it is perfect, it must and will stand alone: its immortality is secure... It was written in serious good faith and deep earnestness, by an honest and upright idiot who believed he knew something of the English language ”.

Voici donc quelques phrases, la plus appropriée étant “ It is difficult to enjoy well so much several langages ” (l'auteur avait compris toute la – comme il faut dire aujourd'hui – problématique), et la plus pertinente est Put your confidence at my.
